The Algerian and Libyan customs agreed during a meeting of the joint commission, held on Monday in Algiers, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in terms of goods movement, fight against fraud and smuggling between the two neighboring countries.

“This fruitful meeting was marked by a spirit of fraternity and convergence of views. It further enabled the two parties to set the expected goals on customs cooperation between the two countries,” Director General of Algerian Customs, Major General Abdelhafidh Bakhouche, told the press, after signing the bilateral meeting’s minutes with his Libyan counterpart, Major General Musa Ali Muhammad.

The meeting is part of the periodic bilateral meetings aimed at discussing the movement of goods at both countries’ borders in order to ensure smooth flow while combating fraud, smuggling and all illicit practices, as the two countries share a 900km border strip.

Furthermore, the meeting focused on cooperation in the field of customs digitization and continuous training.

The proceeding of the Algerian-Libyan Joint Commission took place at the headquarters of the General Directorate of Customs, in the presence of the Libyan delegation that began a work visit to Algeria on Sunday, central staff of Customs, and several of its regional directors via videoconference.

The meeting was also marked by the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of National Community Abroad and African Affairs, as well as the Libyan Ambassador’s representative to Algeria.
