The Russian occupiers sent citizens of Uzbekistan to the front, who were going to the construction site in Mariupol. It is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the summary of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Facebook . “In the units of the Russian occupation troops stationed in the temporarily occupied Gorlovka, Donetsk region, the presence of citizens of Uzbekistan was noted. The indicated persons arrived in the city of Mariupol to carry out construction work,” the report says. At the same time, it is noted that upon arrival, passports were confiscated from citizens of Uzbekistan and mobilized into the…
The new rules came into force on 1 July, but already the two main companies in “ultra-quick commerce” – Getir, a Turkish firm, and Germany’s Flink – had announced they were leaving France. In a statement, Getir, which also owns Gorillas and Frichti, said the decision was “inevitable because of the difficult economic climate, a hostile regulatory environment and an absence of potential buyers”. A commercial court in Paris has now officially placed Getir and Gorillas in liquidation, with the loss of some 1,300 jobs. It gave Frichti three more months to find a possible buyer. The court will rule…
Dog owners in Béziers will have their pets’ saliva sampled so excrement can be linked to specific animals. Dog owners in the southern French town of Béziers are to be required to carry their pet’s “genetic passport” in a trial scheme to reduce dog excrement on the streets. Local mayor Robert Ménard, a former journalist and co-founder of Reporters Sans Frontières, says inhabitants and visitors are fed up with faeces on the town’s pavements. He plans to introduce a two-year experiment to trace and fine those who fail to clear up after their pets. “We have to punish to make…
Report says detention of Ernest Moret was wrong after he was held for almost 24 hours by counter-terrorist police The arrest in London of a radical French publisher under counter-terrorist powers has been referred to the police watchdog after the reviewer of terrorism legislation found that it was wrong. Ernest Moret, 28, was held for almost 24 hours by counter-terrorist police and asked about his opinion of Emmanuel Macron and participation in anti-Macron protests after he arrived at St Pancras station in April for a book fair. In a damning report published on Friday, Jonathan Hall KC, the reviewer of the terrorism legislation, said the police…
Marie-Laure de Decker, the French model who stepped behind the camera to become an internationally recognised war photographer, has died at the age of 75, her family said. She died in hospital on Saturday following a long illness. Born in Algeria when it was a French colony, she started her career as a model before deciding to branch out into photography. In the late 1960s, she took memorable shots of artists Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp, and the writer Philippe Soupault. She covered the Vietnam War early in her career and found success despite her relative lack of experience. “I said to myself: people are going…
French president Emmanuel Macron’s visit to New Caledonia this week comes amid uncertainty over the archipelago’s future, in the wake of the contested 2021 vote on independence. Despite three failed independence votes, the issue of self-determination remains at the forefront of minds for many in the French territory. Macron is expected to meet political leaders in Noumea this week to discuss its future status. About 40% of the population are indigenous Kanak, most of whom support independence. Pro-independence parties, which have been in power since 2017, want full sovereignty by 2025. Those against independence say another referendum is not needed. They argue for…
Abandoned luggage and unexpected crowds – real-time cameras will use artificial intelligence (AI) to detect suspicious activity on the streets of Paris during next summer’s Olympics. But civil rights groups say the technology is a threat to civil liberties, as the BBC’s Hugh Schofield reports. “We are not China; we do not want to be Big Brother,” says François Mattens, whose Paris-based AI company is bidding for part of the Olympics video surveillance contract. Under a recent law, police will be able to use CCTV algorithms to pick up anomalies such as crowd rushes, fights or unattended bags. The law…
Kyiv is convening a meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council, which was created at the Alliance’s summit in July. The topic of discussion is the situation in the Black Sea. This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in his evening address. “I turned to Jens (Stoltenberg) with a proposal to immediately convene such a Council for appropriate crisis consultations. The meeting will take place in a few days. We can overcome the security crisis in the Black Sea,” Zelensky said. Recall that participation in the Council gives Ukraine the right to initiate consultations with the Alliance. Earlier, Russia withdrew from…

During the meeting, the Indonesian government was represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi and Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto, while the French government was represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna and Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu. “The 2+2 meeting went very well. Our relationship with France, especially in the defense field, is the best in decades,” Subianto noted in a statement as…
France and Germany led a diplomatic push to reduce ethnic tension in northern Kosovo by calling for a re-run of April elections largely boycotted by Serbs. The leaders of France and Germany have urged their counterparts in Kosovo and Serbia to agree on holding new municipal elections in northern Kosovo, hoping that another ballot would quell a flare-up of ethnic tensions that have led to violent protests in the region. Speaking at a summit in Moldova on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had advocated for fresh mayoral elections in four municipalities and…
