Turkey and the European Union (EU) will hold a high-level business dialogue in Istanbul almost three and a half years later to highlight the importance of bilateral economic cooperation, Ambassador Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, head of the EU Delegation to Turkey, told Hürriyet Daily News on October 24.
According to him, the meeting will also take place against the backdrop of Brussels’ warnings to Ankara about circumventing sanctions against Russia.
“As the EU, we want to continue to engage with Turkey at the political level in various areas. Commissioner [Oliver] Varhelyi will visit Turkey next week to meet with his counterparts in the Turkish government and engage in a high-level business dialogue,” Meyer-Landrut explained.
Varheli is expected to be in Turkey on October 24 and 25, 2022, where he will meet with officials from the government as well as the business world. His talks follow a visit by European Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Mark Mairead McGuinness, who held talks in Ankara earlier in October.
He also said that Turkey and the EU will hold a high-level meeting on research and development in Brussels in mid-November. “We have a very important economic relationship with Turkey as a candidate country and part of the EU-Turkey customs union. We must rely on this,” the ambassador stressed.
It should be noted that the last high-level economic dialogue meeting between Turkey and the EU was held in February 2019.
A resolution adopted by the EU in 2020 in response to the escalation in the eastern Mediterranean has suspended high-level dialogue between Ankara and Brussels in many areas. The meeting in Istanbul will be held under a different name to overcome this obstacle.
