More than half of Turkey’s residents believe that the country should not join the European Union. This is reported by Yenisafak, citing a web survey by Areda Survey.
It is noted that 51% of respondents believe that Ankara should not join the EU in order not to lose sovereignty. The opposite opinion is shared by 48.6% of respondents – they believe that membership in the European Union will help improve the country’s economic situation.
At the same time, 66% of the poll participants are sure that Turkey will never join the European Union, and 90% do not consider the alliance’s policy towards Ankara to be fair. At the same time, 51% of respondents consider their country to be European. 2,000 people took part in the Internet survey.
Turkey has been a candidate for EU membership since 1999, and has been striving for this since the 1960s. Since the end of the 2000s, the process has practically stopped due to a number of problems – in particular, Brussels pointed to the large role of the army in the political process, the violation of the democratic rights of citizens and the conflict with Cyprus.
Earlier, Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Fakur Kaymakci said that compared to other EU candidate states, it is his country that can make the greatest contribution to the development of the EU.
