A British woman has died along with two other people in a three-car collision on a motorway in northern France. More than 65 firefighters and nine ambulances attended the crash on Sunday evening, which involved eight children and involved a British nine-seater family vehicle and two other cars on the A26 near Neuville-Saint-Vaast and Thélus. Three people were killed and five are in a critical condition. Miriam Posen, a mother of 10 and a member of the Orthodox Jewish community in Stamford Hill, London, has been named in media reports as among those who have died. Her husband, Rabbi Shalom Pinchos…
French President Emmanuel Macron said he believes the peak of rioting across the country has passed after a week of violence. He made the comments on Tuesday at a meeting of more than 200 mayors from areas that have been affected by the unrest. The protests were sparked by the fatal shooting of teenager Nahel M at a traffic stop near Paris on 27 June. However, the president said he still remained “cautious”. “Is the return to calm lasting? I will be careful, but the peak we have experienced in recent days has passed”, he said in a televised address.…
“Could you just go home?” It was a weary-sounding question, directed by a middle-aged French woman at a gang of youths pushing past her, as a mass of defence shield-wielding riot-police chased after them. It was the early hours of Sunday morning on the Champs Elysées – the tourist shoppers’ paradise in central Paris. The air was acrid with tear gas. Night number five of the street riots that have engulfed France since the killing of Nahel, a French Algerian teen, by a policeman on a Parisian housing estate. My colleagues and I were filming the chaos all around when…
When the poor French suburbs catch media attention, it is usually because they are up in flames. The current conflagration is no exception. It was triggered by the killing of Nahel M, 17, after police say he failed to comply with an order to stop his car in Nanterre near Paris. The tragedy has turned the spotlight again on the so-called “banlieues” – the suburbs of French cities – which have been hit by another wave of riots across France. For some, the violence is the result of poverty and discrimination: entrenched social ills ensure that France’s bleak estates remain…
Riots in France appear to be calming, after five days of violent protests in response to the shooting of teenager Nahel M during a police traffic stop. Sunday night saw violence subside and fewer arrests were made. However, President Emmanuel Macron has asked the interior ministry to keep a “massive” police presence on the streets. On Monday, mayors called for rallies to be held outside town halls to protest the violence and looting. In Nanterre, Nahel’s hometown, mayor Patrick Jarry said he was pleased the violence had subsided, but added that “we shouldn’t lose sight of the incident that sparked…
The last surviving member of a French commando unit that took part in the Normandy landings during World War Two has died at the age of 100. Léon Gautier served with the Fusiliers Marins Commando – the only unit of Free French troops to go ashore during D-Day on 6 June 1944. Mr Gautier later called war a “misery” that “ends with widows and orphans”. French President Emmanuel Macron described Mr Gautier and his comrades as “heroes of the Liberation”. “We will not forget him,” Mr Macron wrote on Twitter. Regional Mayor Romain Bail described Mr Gautier as “a local…

The United States understood that Ukraine would not be able to withstand Russian air attacks, writes WSJ. The Ka-52 Alligator helicopters turned out to be especially dangerous. While Kyiv is dreaming about the F-16 next year, the Russian Aerospace Forces are already destroying these hopes. The author of the article assessed the prospects for the West, taking into account the current situation. BRUSSELS. When Ukraine launched a massive counteroffensive this spring, Western military officials knew that Kiev had neither the training nor the weapons — from projectiles to warplanes — to push out Russian forces. But they hoped that Ukrainian courage and resourcefulness would help…
The riots which spread countrywide after the killing by police of Nahel M, a 17-year-old boy of Algerian origin, have shaken French society to its very core. The unrest has been described as unprecedented in terms of scale and intensity. In Marseille, a city that I’ve called home over the past year, an absurd routine settled into place. Afternoons were for rushing to finish errands before shops and public transport prematurely shut down ahead of the impending chaos. Evenings were characterised by a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse between police and rioters, set to the pulsating soundtrack of car sirens, helicopters…
Ukraine will receive American F-16 fighters, but their delivery will take several months, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in an interview with CNN. The Secretary of State said that “even if the decision on the F-16 were made tomorrow, it would be several months before they begin to apply.” According to him, we are talking about training, maintenance, the availability of opportunities for the use of fighters in combined arms operations, and all this takes time. Blinken at the same time confirmed that Kyiv would receive fighters. “I think yes. It is important to focus on ensuring that when they…
